2 Inch Carbon Steel Pipe

A recent inquiry from a contractor in Vietnam only listed one line:

2 inch carbon steel pipe, Schedule 40.

No further explanation at the beginning.

We sent a standard quotation the same day.

A few days later, the customer replied asking whether 2 inch pipes would be supplied in fixed length or random length, because on-site cutting capacity was limited.

That detail changed the discussion more than the price itself.

In many projects, 2 inch carbon steel pipe is not treated as a main line material. It is often used in auxiliary piping, support systems, and equipment connections inside industrial facilities.

Because of that, the requirements vary depending on how the site is organized.

Some projects prefer fixed length to reduce cutting work. Others prefer random length to reduce waste during installation.

We often see this decision made after the first quotation, not before.

The material itself is usually straightforward carbon steel.

Most common specifications include ASTM A53 and ASTM A106 Grade B, depending on temperature and service conditions.

API 5L Grade B is also used in some projects where the piping system is connected to transmission sections.

But in practice, the discussion rarely starts with standards.

It usually starts with size and usage conditions.

For 2 inch carbon steel pipe, the most common OD is 60.3 mm.

Wall thickness varies depending on schedule requirements such as SCH 40 and SCH 80.

What matters more in real procurement is not the nominal size, but how the pipe will be installed on site.

For example, one Middle East project required pre-marked bundles because installation teams worked in separated zones and could not cross-check materials easily during construction.

The pipe specification itself did not change.

Only the handling method changed.
