The SCH 40 Pipe Was Approved, but the Drawing Was Not Final

The inquiry came from a trading company handling a maintenance project in Qatar.

The request was for 8 SCH 40 carbon steel pipe.

No attachment was included at first.

We replied asking for the drawing and material specification.

A few hours later, three files were forwarded.

Each file showed a slightly different revision of the same pipeline layout.

At first glance, the differences looked minor.

A few pipe runs were shifted. Some supports were relocated. One section was extended.

But the quantity of 8 SCH 40 carbon steel pipe changed in each version.

For a short period, even the buyer internally was unsure which revision was valid.

Engineering referred to one file. Procurement referred to another. Site planning used a printed copy from an earlier meeting.

The pipe itself never changed.

Only the interpretation of the latest drawing did.

One engineer eventually wrote:

"We need to freeze Revision 3 before we continue procurement."

That comment stopped all quotation updates temporarily.

After an internal coordination meeting, Revision 3 was confirmed as the official reference.

Once that decision was made, everything became stable again.

The procurement team issued a final purchase order based on a single version.

Looking back at the email history, most messages were not about SCH 40 pipe specifications.

They were about which drawing should define the SCH 40 quantity in the first place.

The steel was never in doubt.

The document version was.
